My forthcoming 'Soviet Partisan versus German Security Soldier' is based on a strong primary source base, principally archival sources both published and otherwise, along with memoirs. It examines the strengths and weaknesses of German anti-partisan measures and partisan activities between 1941 and 1943 through three case studies that look at these engagements from both sides. All these case studies take place on Soviet territory occupied by the German 281st Security Division in north-west Russia - in engagements with partisans of the 2nd Leningrad and 2nd Kalinin Partisan Brigades. It is due to be published by Osprey Publishing on 31 October 2019.

During the latter half of the twentieth century there has been a drastic shift in the academic study of war. As a result, the traditional field of military history was broadened to include several new approaches to the historical study of warfare. The recording of the personal experience of soldiers during war, especially as a key component of the broader framework of war and society, proved particularly popular. Traditionally the South African deployments to East Africa, North Africa and Italy during the Second World War receives the bulk of local historical attention. Unfortunately, the deployment of the 7th South African Infantry Brigade (SA Inf Bde) to Madagascar, as a part of the larger Allied operation, remains largely ignored. The chance finding of a series of wartime letters, written by Arthur Bintliff, offers a rare glimpse into the personal experience of a South African soldier during one of the forgotten campaigns of the war. The Bintliff correspondence provides an unprecedented account of the thrill of combat, the monotony of daily military routine, the leisure time utilisation of soldiers, and the experience of wartime Madagascar in general. By analysing the Bintliff correspondence, this paper offers a rare, in-depth, discussion on the South African military experience during the Madagascar Campaign as experienced by an ordinary infantryman.

Manuals, orders, and preparations by Japanese and Western militaries are described in the defense of the Samoan Archipelago during World War II. In addition, unrecorded deployments of military units and war activities in Upolu, Savaii, and Manu’a are assessed from Samoan cultural histories including turning off or covering all lights, even during times of birth. Also discussed is the social impact of relationships between Western persons and Samoans, especially after the departure and casualties during Guadalcanal and subsequent battles.

From its invasion of Manchuria in 1932 until a year after World War II ended (1946), the Japanese imperial armies abducted, coerced or deceitfully enticed girls and women across the Asia-Pacific region into sexual slavery at its scores of so-called “comfort stations”. Estimates of the victims vary from 200,00 to 400,000. The vast majority died as a result, either by execution or the horrendous effects of their exploitation; and until the 1980 their testimonies were largely lost.
On 14 August 2019, global remembrance ceremonies and protests were held in solidarity with the victims and to demand justice, over 70 years on. The group Friends of Comfort Women, Sydney, invited me to speak at the Sydney demonstration (see https://tinyurl.com/y4u8ga8p); attached are the longhand notes. “Time bombs,” “Trojans Horses” and “Dithering Hamlets” were all part of the everyday jargon of the World War II’s ultra-Secretive Political Warfare Executive (PWE). The PWE’s instructors used these terms in the training of the next generation of propagandists and political warriors. The Political Warfare Executive Syllabus reveals for the first time what it took to become a propagandist in what was then the elite political/psychological warfare unit in the world. Under the maxim that a good propagandist is trained not born, the lecturers of the PWE Training School at Woburn Abbey and then Brondesbury systematically explored every aspect of how to deliver a lethal dose of propaganda to the enemy and then a purgative and curative dose in the peace that followed.
The views of the PWE’s instructors were controversial. This is significant because they would play an important, if hidden, role in how Europe is developing even today. For example, they held a low opinion of the French in general and considered that they had been reduced to the level of “dithering Hamlets” by the German “Trojan Horses” even before the first German tank had crossed the Belgian frontier. On the dark side of PWE operations, they were not above killing the prostitutes whose brothels served the German U-Boot fleet in order to amplify their propaganda message. Perhaps most significant is that they saw Great Britain as European and espoused a Europe that looks very much like the European Union of the early 21st Century. However, there is one important difference. They saw this Greater Europe as accepting the British way of life and being led by Great Britain and not embracing American culture under German leadership. The Political Warfare Executive Syllabus: A Crash Course in Mass Deception Volume I introduces the reader to the history and theory of political warfare as seen through the eyes of the inheritors of Lord Northcliffe’s Crewe House. Drawing on JFC Fuller and his concept of a war fought in the mind without armies, it establishes the theoretical parameters of political warfare. The Political Warfare Executive Syllabus: Words at War Volume II takes the PWE’s theories and shows what it might look like when words are weaponised and deployed in anger. Though the lectures are over 70-years old they are once more relevant in that they resonated with current attempts at engaging in political warfare that now plays itself out through social media platforms. A modern-day amalgam of leaflet, broadcast and rumour.

'Biography Finally Brings Bradley to the Fore' Of the great World War II Army commanders, only Gen. Omar N. Bradley lacks a complete biography. Bradley is frequently marginalized by the more illustrious Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower and the more flamboyant Gen. George S. Patton. In Omar Nelson Bradley: America’s GI General, Steven L. Ossad corrects this imbalance. Given that 2018 is the 125th anniversary of the general’s birth, this excellent biography cannot have come at a more opportune time.'

The Masefau Site is located along the coast at the village of Masefau in eastern Tutuila, the largest island of American Samoa, in Western Polynesia. The site is associated with two features comprising octagonal, domed-top pill boxes with gun-slits similar to two-tiered pill boxes found throughout Tutuila. The fortifications at Masefau were impacted by a tsunami, which revealed the base of these structures. The exposure of the foundations of these structures add to our knowledge of World War II fortifications and may indicate differing tactical strategies by the U.S. Marines and Navy in preparing the defenses of Tutuila for a Japanese invasion during World War II.

The Afao Site is located along the coast at the village of Afao in western Tutuila, the largest island in American Samoa. The site is associated with multiple features comprising a range of prehistoric grinding stones including a unique tripartite specimen. World War II features at Afao include two pillboxes and the remains of a broken granite shelf where servicemen carved inscriptions into the rocks. These inscriptions include Western and Samoan personal names, service designations, and possibly unit designations and the name of a construction company. The site borders Visigano Point, adjacent to the village of Asili, where United States Marine Corps units camped during World War II. The Afao Site provides unique information on World War II defenses and U.S. Marine Corps tactics, cross-cultural interaction, and prehistoric varieties of foaga or grinding stones before the arrival of Europeans.

The Poloa Site is located along the coast at the village of Poloa in western Tutuila, the largest island in American Samoa. The site is associated with three features comprising multisided, flat-topped, pillbox observation posts. These fortifications were built during the World War II era and comprise unique architecture, thin stanchions supporting a flattened concrete ceiling. These defensive fortifications are atypical of other defensive fortifications in the evidenced during this period including the robust domed-top pillboxes throughout the island such as those discovered at Afao. The material paucity that characterize the observation posts at Poloa prompts questions as to why these fortifications were constructed differently compared to other defensive architecture throughout Tutuila during World War II.
